The self-publishing world can be an overwhelming and oftentimes disappointing place. We pour so much time and energy into the writing and production of a book only to watch it get swallowed up by all the other books out there, many of which have the advantage of the backing of a marketing team. Of course, some strike it lucky and get to get to gleefully watch as their book soars far above all expectations into the limelight. It’s a rare occurrence in the grand scheme of things, but it does happen. For the rest of us, however, we enjoy a modest to meager following and show of support.
But what if it didn’t have to be that way?
Recently, I made a suggestion on Twitter that I feel deserves more attention and consideration. It’s an idea that I firmly believe could change the lives of countless indie authors who might, despite sitting on a literary gem, fade into oblivion. It’s an idea that could make an author who might otherwise be overlooked simply because they don’t have the same marketing power as a traditionally published author or an indie author with the financial means to properly advertise their work.
What if we, as independent authors, chose another indie author (by recommendation) to spotlight once a month and support? Imagine the boost we could give that author if even 100 of us were to purchase and review their book? This sort of attention could thrust an author into the light and start them on a cycle of attention by readers that, I hope, they will turn around and use to help another indie author. Of course, the brunt of the effect is dependent on the purchaser reviewing and mentioning the book in the spotlight to friends and family members who, in turn, might mention the book to other potential readers. This ensures that it isn’t only other authors purchasing the work of other authors which, while still beneficial, could become very cyclical.
I know some of the push back is going to be that starving artists don’t have the funds to support other starving artists, but think about the benefits. For $10-$20 a month, you would receive a book to enjoy that you might not otherwise have noticed as well as the knowledge that you have helped another author. Beyond that, you are earning goodwill and a possible seat on the Limelight Rotation. Another added bonus to helping out other indie authors is that your name will be on the minds of podcasters, booktubers, and the like. Interviews and other mentions could make the difference between a book moving forward or fading into obscurity.
I believe it’s worth setting aside a little bit of cash every month or so if not simply to benefit a growing personal library. Seriously, friends. Let’s make this a thing. Let’s help ourselves by helping other independent authors!
